A Focused Approach to
Your Streaming Path

Why filter a web of connections when only one truly matters, the path that feeds your streamer or DAC? In a typical switch, multiple connections can bleed noise into each other, creating a more complex electrical environment around the one output that matters most.

The SmoothLAN Regenerator cuts through that clutter by focusing solely on the dedicated path between the network and your audio system. It also operates at 100Mbps by design, a deliberate choice focused on signal integrity rather than unnecessary speed.

100MB/Second Network

1GB/Second Network

What Does This Show?

Filtering within a data signal range is not feasible as it would distort the signal and cause errors or data loss. A 1Gbps network operates across a much wider frequency spectrum, limiting the ability to filter noise effectively.

100Mbps networks are inherently less affected by radio frequency noise and allow more effective filtering: above 100Mbps, unwanted noise outside the signal range can be removed without affecting the data. 100Mbps is more than sufficient for the highest-resolution audio.

Featuring Fully Compartmentalised Isolation

At the core of the Regenerator’s performance is Stack Audio’s FCI (Fully Compartmentalised Isolation)

Each circuit is shielded in its own precision-machined pocket, surrounded by exposed gold, providing the shortest, lowest impedance path to ground. This ensures each circuit can perform at its best, free from surrounding noise interference.

Signal Conditioning

Dual-stage passive filtering is applied at both the input and output stages.

This reduces high- frequency noise before regeneration and removes any residual noise introduced during processing, maintaining control across the entire signal path.

A Cable Cannot Enhance,Its Role is to Preserve

Our in-house cable is designed to maintain the integrity of the regenerated Ethernet signal between SmoothLAN and your streamer. Using oxygen-free copper conductors and gold-plated connectors, it provides a stable, low-noise link that protects the work already done.

Claims are easy. Measurements aren’t

Before Regenerator

Eye pattern: Before Regenerator

The eye is partially closed, showing distortion, reduced amplitude, and elevated jitter — timing errors that affect signal clarity.

After Regenerator

Eye pattern: After Regenerator

The eye is wide open, with sharper transitions, stronger amplitude, and significantly reduced jitter.

An eye pattern (or eye diagram) is a visual tool used to assess the signal integrity of a high-speed digital signal. It overlays many bits of data on top of each other to form a shape that looks like an eye. The more open the eye, the cleaner and more stable the signal. A closed or blurry eye opening indicates distortion, noise and jitter.

The shape of the eye pattern reveals how much jitter and noise is present in the signal. A wide and open eye opening indicates low jitter and accurate, consistent timing. A narrow or closed eye indicates high jitter and signal integrity distortion.

When the signal crosses into the central area where it shouldn’t — called the eye-opening — it’s known as an eye violation. These violations increase the risk of bit errors and jitter within the receiver.

Colour intensity shows how often the signal passes through certain points. Brighter areas reflect consistency; scattered samples indicate instability.

It reflects signal stability and timing accuracy. A clean, open eye means low jitter and reliable transmission. If the signal crosses into the central “eye” area, it’s called an eye violation, which can lead to decoding errors.

They show signal density. Brighter areas mean more consistent transitions; cooler colours show noise or less frequent paths.

The regenerated signal has less distortion, stronger amplitude, and significantly reduced jitter — all visible in the wider, cleaner eye opening.

The regenerator regenerates the signal, removing noise and jitter. This produces a cleaner waveform, resulting in a larger, higher-amplitude eye diagram.

Technical Details

The SmoothLAN Regenerator takes the network digital signal, filters, re-clocks and regenerates it, before passing it straight through to the music streamer. It features compartmentalised isolation, optimised grounding and an ultra-low noise power, all designed to produce a clean, noise free signal.

FAQs

The Network Filter is purely passive: it removes noise and interference at the network input. The Regenerator includes passive filtering too, but adds active electronic stages that re-clock and regenerate the signal.

Filtering can remove noise, but it can’t undo timing errors already in the signal. What leaves the Regenerator is timed by its own high-precision master clock, not by whatever is happening upstream on your network.

It depends on your system. The Regenerator already includes passive filtering, so adding the Filter won’t always bring a further benefit, and endlessly cascading network filters isn’t always effective.

If you do use both, place the Filter first, closest to your router or switch, and the Regenerator directly before your streamer. It’s also worth trying the Filter elsewhere in your system to see what works best.

Almost every DAC and streamer re-clocks the audio data, but that clock shares a ground plane with the Ethernet circuitry. Noise from the network interface pollutes that ground before the internal re-clocking even happens.

Cleaning and re-clocking the Ethernet signal before it reaches your streamer means your streamer’s clock has less noise to work against. That means lower jitter and less disturbance to the ground plane, and customers tell us the presentation becomes more natural and effortless.

Even though Ethernet is packet-based, the connection between your switch and streamer never stops. Frames are transmitted constantly, even when no music is playing, and they still carry jitter, phase noise and RF interference.

Your streamer’s network receiver stays active the whole time to keep the link synchronised. So the quality of that signal matters well before the streamer turns the packets into audio.

Between your router or network switch and your streamer, as close to the streamer as possible, using the supplied cable. This gives the cleanest signal as it enters your system. It works best for most systems, but you’re welcome to experiment with other positions.

No. The Regenerator isn’t a switch: it has one input and one output. That’s deliberate. A multi-port switch runs every connection through a single chip, while the Regenerator is dedicated to one connection, with every circuit in its own precision-machined pocket and the clock sealed in a cavity of its own.

If you need to connect several devices, you’ll still use your router or switch, with the Regenerator between it and your streamer.

Yes. The Regenerator works on networks of 1Gbps and beyond. Your router automatically recognises it as a 100Mbps device and sends the signal at 100Mbps, so the Regenerator can operate as designed.

100Mbps is chosen for signal integrity rather than speed. Its narrower bandwidth generates less RF noise and lets the Regenerator filter noise that a gigabit connection is too wide to touch. And 100Mbps is still far more bandwidth than high-resolution audio needs, so playback won’t drop out or buffer.

The Regenerator uses a custom low-noise external power supply with multi-stage filtering and active regulation, designed so the supply doesn’t undo the work the Regenerator is doing.

Every system is unique, so we can’t tell you exactly what you’ll hear. What customers tell us is that the presentation becomes more natural and effortless, with greater space, flow and openness, a character that feels closer to analogue.

The easiest way to find out is to try it at home for 60 days.

The SmoothLAN Regenerator (105 x 80 x 23mm, 333g, in black or silver), its external power supply, and a 0.5m cable made from oxygen-free copper CAT 7, with gold-plated connectors. The cable is designed to protect the regenerated signal all the way to your streamer.

Try it at home for 60 days. If it’s not for you, we’ll arrange collection, cover the return costs and give you a full refund, subject to the parts being complete and undamaged.

Customer Reviews

"This isn’t a subtle improvement—it’s a clear and tangible leap forward. The
soundstage deepens, the imaging tightens, and everything becomes more
life like. The Regenerator has elevated my entire listening experience, making it
more immersive, natural, and fatigue-free. It’s now a permanent fixture in my
Hi-Fi setup."

Smooth Generator
Earlier, I purchased the AUVA 50s for my speakers, AUVA EQs for everything
else, and the passive SmoothLAN from Stack Audio. All of these exceeded my
expectations—often in surprising ways—so I was naturally curious whether this
new active regenerator would also earn a permanent spot in my system.
I’ve been testing this compact unit for about a month now, and here are my
findings.

“Tea for Two” from Lyn Stanley's Tribute to 1924 is a perfect showcase for
what the Regenerator brings to the table. The performance and recording—
already exceptional—become even more engaging. The soundstage opens up,
and the music blossoms like spring itself. The holographic presentation
becomes deeply immersive, pulling you into the performance. The entire album,
in fact, benefits from this upgrade. It's a superbly recorded, produced, and
performed work—and the Regenerator enhances every facet with grace.

“Where I’ll Find You” by Joan Shelley demonstrates an expanded, more
enveloping soundstage. Her beautiful voice detaches effortlessly from the
loudspeakers and is rendered with remarkable clarity. Without the Regenerator,
her sibilants can verge on harsh, and the depth of the performance feels
slightly diminished. With it, everything snaps into focus. It's as though a layer of
haze has been lifted.

“Blues Run the Game” by Headless Heroes also benefits significantly. Texture
becomes more defined, instrument separation improves, and subtle production
details—like the digitally added reverb—finally emerge with clarity. Previously,
those nuances were buried in the mix. This track also doubles as a great test
for comparing Ethernet cables: within seconds, you can tell if a cable is too
harsh (especially during the guitar intro) or if the reverb becomes unnatural and
fatiguing (around the 00:10 mark).

“Running Out” from Pretty Maids' Syndicate album, recorded at Sweet Silence
Studios in Copenhagen, brings back vivid memories. I had the chance to visit
the studio during the album’s production and interview producer Flemming
Rasmussen. I was stunned by the sheer power of the drum sound—it was
massive. With the Stack Audio Regenerator, that explosive energy is preserved
but refined. The music is clearer, less fatiguing, and more listenable for long
sessions. Now, I can enjoy these heavy, highly compressed tracks for hours
without tiring my ears. That’s no small feat.

“Yesterday” from the 2023 remixes is as fresh as a summer breeze—it really
does sound like it was recorded just yesterday (pun intended). With the
SmoothLAN Regenerator in place, the delicate strumming of the guitar and the
nuance in Paul McCartney’s vocal become more vivid. The clarity and intimacy
are striking, breathing new life into this timeless classic.

“Say You Don’t Mind” with Hailey Tuck never fails to put a smile on my face.
The coherence of the instruments playing in harmony is delightful. On many
systems—even some high-end ones—this track can come off flat or uninspired.
Not so with the Regenerator. It transforms the track into an engaging, dynamic
performance that holds your attention from start to finish.

“Station VI: Sancta Veronica” by Liszt, performed by Leif Ove Andsnes and
The Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, conducted by Grete Pedersen, is another
standout. The emotional depth and spatial rendering are sublime. Every vocal
line and instrumental detail is presented with breathtaking realism.

“Beethoven’s Violin Concerto – Larghetto,” performed by Nicola Benedetti
(DECCA Records, 2025), also showcases the Regenerator’s finesse. There’s not
a trace of harshness, even as the piece reveals the tiniest sonic details.
Dynamics are nuanced and elegant, offering a nice balance of softness and
strength. The transparency and “hear-through” quality are simply spot-on.

“Girona” with the Kühn Quartet is a challenging track for many Hi-Fi systems.
There’s so much happening at once—but with the Stack Regenerator, it’s a joy
to follow each instrument. Every line is distinct, precisely placed, and
emotionally expressive.

Power Supply Surprise
The included switch-mode power supply deserves special mention. It's been
carefully tuned to match the Regenerator, and it's honestly one of the best I've
tried. I compared it with a €205 Allo Shanti linear power supply. In blind A/B
tests (my wife kindly swapped the cables without telling me), I preferred the
Stack Audio PSU every single time. The Allo is excellent, no question—but the
Stack PSU just added that little bit more: a deeper soundstage, increased
resolution, and an overall sense of musical ease. Sometimes, bigger and more
expensive isn’t better—just different. In this case, Stack’s PSU is a perfect
match: simple, effective, and best of all, forgettable in the best possible way—it
simply works.

Sound of Science

With Stack Audio’s SmoothLAN Regenerator, digital audio takes a significant
step closer to the warmth and soul of analog, while retaining the precision and
clarity we love about digital. The slight edginess I sometimes noticed from
Qobuz (my preferred streaming platform for its excellent sound quality) is now
gone. Yet, the attack and decay of instruments like harps, guitars, and cellos
remain intact—only now they’re rendered with greater finesse and control.

So, should you upgrade your speakers, or invest in the Stack Audio
Regenerator? In many cases, the Regenerator will give your existing setup a far
more noticeable and satisfying boost. It reduces ear fatigue, increases clarity,
and improves detail retrieval. Vocals are purer, cymbals shimmer more naturally,
and decays linger beautifully. It doesn’t just make your system sound better—it
makes listening more enjoyable. And that’s what it’s all about.

This isn’t a subtle improvement—it’s a clear and tangible leap forward. The
soundstage deepens, the imaging tightens, and everything becomes more
lifelike. The Regenerator has elevated my entire listening experience, making it
more immersive, natural, and fatigue-free. It’s now a permanent fixture in my
Hi-Fi setup.

For many years, my system has been fully digital—except for the speakers. I use
a digital Lyngdorf streamer/amp, and I can say with confidence: for the first
time, my fully digital system now sounds analog again. And that’s one of the
highest compliments I can give. The SmoothLAN Regenerator restores warmth,
emotion, and musicality and reveals details previously hidden. It makes digital
feel human again.

"I really did not know what to expect as this is the first network filter I purchased. I was a little shocked to be honest. Noise floor dropped, there was now more detail, instruments sound more real alive with better dynamics. Soundstage is now taller and wider."

"With the Introduction of the Lan Regenerator, I honestly could not differentiate between local CD and the streamed version (stream source - same CD ripped - MacOSX / Roon -> BT WiFi Mesh -> StackAudio LAN ReGen -> StackAudio Link II -> Rega Isis).

So initial conclusion. For me - in my system - worth the money."

My digital front end is a Rega Isis Valve and I've been using it for some time (couple of years) with an StackAudio's Link II as a Roon endpoint. While impressive and so so convenient - Link II / USB configuration never sounded quite as good as local CD source - blind test I could reliably tell a difference. The former having a marginally flatter soundstage, a slight digital sheen and lacking the exquisite organic voicing / musicality of CD's played directly on the Rega Isis.

"I received the regenerator yesterday. The difference just blew my socks off. Most of the "tweaks" out there are subtle (the smoothlan isn't subtle at all, mind you) but the regenerator is undeniably a bigger step up in sound reproduction quality. It's sounding more robust but also more delicate at the same time. Tonality, timbre, timing, pacing & layering..... somehow everything is more accurate and acute. Dynamic jumps come easier as if there is more headroom available. The sound is more relaxed and at the same time it has more bite to it. Stage, depth and width reproduction is on another level thanks to the regenerator. A lot of smear or veiling of the signal has vanished just as advertised, no matter what I listened to!"
